the limits of control…

Paul, Sharon, Willie – i don’t know if The Limits of Control has been released in the RSA. If not you are in for a treat. A taciturn assassin with a double espresso habit (“…i said two espressos in two cups…”), immaculate silk suits, a sublime flamenco performance rehearsal, a collection of the coolest cameos, relentless, one after the other, did i mention the soundtrack is Boris and Sunn O)))?

how to be a … (2) …

13 October, 2009

I get through to the same person i spoke with that morning.

“Oh yes, i have spoken with our general manager. She doesn’t believe there is any need to talk to her directly at the moment. You see, they are going to hire a project manager, and we must wait until then.”

“Ok, do you know when the project manager will be starting?”

“Oh yes, well, the project manager will assess the scope of work and will then make a decision regarding who else they are going to need”.

“Ok, and do you know how long that will take?”

“Oh, soon, it shouldn’t take more than a while.”

“That’s good, do you know maybe how long that will be? A few days, a week, a month?”

“I’m sorry, but you know i’m only the services coordinator here, and i really don’t know all the details. You must understand that we are all volunteers here…”

“Can you in the meantime perhaps send me the high level requirements document that is mentioned here in the original advertisement. It says here this is available on request”.

“I’m sorry, but you know i’m only the services coordinator here, and i really don’t know all the details. You must understand that we are all volunteers here…”

And so it went on for a while longer, my tone degenerated, i became snarky and then gave up, asking that they please let me know how things develop further.

A week later i received an email that drove the point home in case i remained confused.

Hello Rainer

I have just left a message on your answerphone but thought it best to follow up with an email.

As I said I have discussed the website project with our General Manager and can confirm the information I gave you last week – the Board has decided to employ a project manager for this and are currently in discussion with someone who has taken this on, it is now up to that person as to how they proceed.

Thank you however for your interest and I would suggest keeping an eye on the Volunteer Now website for similar roles that come up from time to time.  As you are already on our database all that is required is a phone call to our office and a mention that you have been into our office before and we are then able to give you the information for the role you are interested in.

Kind regards
